Lesson #6: Connecting to the SERVER

Our school's server is an invaluable tool for backing up important files and accessing software available for your computer. Think of the server as the 'home base' for every computer in the building. If you regularly save important files on the server, and your computer crashes and can't be replaced, wouldn't it be nice to know that your files are still intact? All it takes is one time of losing ALL your important documents due to a computer crash to realize the importance (and convenience) of backing up your files to a server. It's like an insurance policy against any unforeseen circumstances that may occur with your computer.

Every teacher in the building has access to their own personal server space.

How do I access my personal server space?

Go "Under the Apple" and select Chooser:

CHOOSER

After selecting the Chooser, you will see the following window:

Chooser Part 2

Follow the steps as shown in the picture. On the left, click AppleShare, and you should see two choices on the right appear. Select "Server" and then click OK. Then you will see a window that allows you to enter your username and password, as shown below:

Username and Password

Your username is your first and last name. Be sure to include a space between your first name and your last name, and that you're sure your first name is correct (no nicknames and short versions). You should know your password, but if you don't, see me and I can either change it or tell you the default password used for most teachers. Hit CONNECT when you have entered your username and password. The following screen will appear next, giving you choices of servers that you can mount on your desktop:

Select the server that shows your first and last name. This is your personal server space. The grade level ("5th Grade," in this example) server is what students use to save their work. The "ILP Plans" server is what teachers will use to complete Individual Learning Plans for their students. Once the correct server is highlighted, click OK. You should then see your server appear on your desktop.

Close some windows if you don't see it right away.

Now that you know how to connect to the server, take a short QUIZ to check for understanding.
